Cash assistance of Php100,000 for the families of overseas Filipinos who died due to Covid-19 is being proposed by a lawmaker to the House.
Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said that the assistance will benefit the families of the 301 OFWs who succumbed to the virus. He said it meant a ‘sincere gesture’ of the government to their contribution of migrant workers to the Philippine economy.
“That is not too much, but it would be a sincere gesture to our modern-day heroes in general that we appreciate their immense contribution to our country’s growth. Hundreds of them died since the lockdown in March due to Covid-19 or while working to help their families and the nation,” he was quoted as saying by The Filipino Times.
He said that he would recommend the house that the funds be included in the proposed Bayanihan 2 or Bayanihan to Recover as One bill.
“We can approve Bayanihan 2 shortly after we convene for our second regular session on July 27. We should give the assistance as soon as possible,” Rodriguez said.
