The Dubai Prisons, along with charity groups and private individuals, have worked hand-in-hand and spent AED1.4 million to help repatriate 1,145 prisoners go back home.

The initiative ‘Your Return is A Duty’ was organized by the Dubai Police’s General Department of Punitive and Correctional Institutions.

According to The National report, the beneficiaries are prisoners who have completed their jail terms but could not afford to buy their return tickets.

“The department, in collaboration with partners including charities and philanthropists, has managed to provide tickets worth AED1,479,010 for 1,145 inmates [males and females] during the first half of this year,” Brig. Ali Al Shamali, director of the Punitive and Correctional Institutions at Dubai Police, said.

The gesture also aims to reunite the prisoners with their families who haven’t seen their loved ones for years already.

“Other various annual humanitarian initiatives, organized by the department to help inmates and their families, include sponsoring tuition fees, residential charges, medical equipment, and blood money, as well as providing food assistance and distributing Eid clothes and school bags,” he added.
