A second wave of Covid-19 outbreak is possible in the UAE shall residents continue to break the precautionary measures that are set to prevent the spread of the virus, a top official warned.
“The pandemic has not ended. If UAE residents do not adhere to preventive measures, we will be on the verge of a second outbreak,” Obaid Al Hussan Al Shamsi, director-general of the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, said in an interview on Abu Dhabi TV.
He also added the national sterilization program, which had curfew timings at night, may be reintroduced.
The warning came after the country sees the rise in the number of infections in the past two weeks. The health authority in the UAE has earlier called on residents not to be complacent, thus advising them to strictly follow safety guidelines, which include wearing of face masks, avoid gatherings, and follow social distancing norms.
“The return of the residents was a major in fact in the increase in Covid-19 infections in the country, and so is the complacency in adhering to precautionary measures. The increase in the number of infections was expected,” he further added.
He said shall the sterilization program be reintroduced, it is for the betterment of the public, and not curtailing their freedoms.
