A top official from the Department of Labor Employment (DOLE) revealed that the number of Filipinos who are currently jobless is now at 3.3 million amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The estimated number that was revealed by Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III contradicts with the Social Weather Station’s (SWS). According to them, the adult joblessness rate in the Philippines is at 45.5 percent or 27.3 million individuals.
“Kami naman we don’t dispute that because that is a survey. Sa amin kasi we base our figures on the submission of all employers na nag-submit sa amin ng numbers at names ng employees na tinanggalan sa trabaho,” Bello was quoted as saying by ABS-CBN Teleradyo.
“Sa amin, mas accurate kasi nandiyan number na ibinigay ng employer, nandiyan mga pangalan. Alam namin ilan nawalan ng trabaho,” he added.
Bello also explained that there are workers who have permanently lost their jobs, workers who lost their jobs temporarily, and workers whose working hours have been reduced instead of being terminated.
The labor secretary, on the other hand, promised that those who have been terminated from work will be given aid under the Bayanihan Act II.
“The moment na mapirmahan ng ating pangulo yung Bayanihan Act to Heal as One part 2 then meron na kaming additional budget this will be the budget doon sa porgram namin, unang-una yung CAMP or COVID Adjustment Measure Program, magbibigay kami ng cash assistance for all formal workers na mawalan ng trabaho,” he added.
