Pinay student in UAE captivates hearts of netizens for Apo Whang-Od portrait

-

A Filipina student in the UAE is now making waves online after showing off her latest masterpiece–a paper quilling portrait of Philippine’s national treasure, Apo Whang-oD.

Angela de Jesus, 18, shared the photo on Instagram. She used Windsor & Newton cartridge pad, Fabriano construction paper, and white glue to make the portrait of the renowned mambabatok (traditional tattoo artist) in Kalinga.

The teenage Filipina student spent six to eight hours a day for a month and a half to finish her stunning masterpiece.

“I have been working on this piece for a month and a half now, and I finally finished it today. I started doing paper quilling for my exam work in art last March so I was hesitant to do this piece at first since I don’t feel like it will turn out good but guess I was wrong,” she wrote on Instagram.

The tattoo artist that she had featured on the portrait is a traditional tattooist for the headhunters in the Philippines. She is 103 years old and is considered to be the last of her kind.

She revealed that art helps her cope with today’s situation.
