First Filipina mayor elected in England dies after a ‘serious illness’


The first Filipina mayor elected in England, Cynthia Barker, has died because of a serious illness. She was 58. 

In a Facebook post of her brother, Gene Alcantara, announced the untimely death of her sister. 

“It is with extreme sadness that we announced the passing of The Worship Hertsmere Mayor Councilor Cynthia Barker following a bout of serious illness,” he wrote. 

Barker was the first Filipino mayor of Hertsmere, England. The brother wrote that they will be announcing further information on Barker’s death. 

“We will be issuing further information in due course, but may we ask please to respect the family’s privacy at this very difficult time. Your prayers for the repose of her soul would however be welcome,” Alcantara added.
