Philippines ranks 66th out of 91 countries in terms of fighting spread of Covid-19


The Philippines has ranked 66th out of 91 countries in terms of fighting the spread of the coronavirus, international medical journal The Lancet published. 

The Lancet wrote on September 14 that President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘medical populism’ as among the reasons for the country’s dismissal ranking. 

It added that medical populism is ‘simplifying the pandemic by downplaying its impacts or touting easy solutions or treatments, spectacularizing their responses to the crisis, forging divisions between the people and dangerous others, and making medical knowledge claims to support the above.’

Apart from the Philippine president, The Lancet also cited US President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have exhibited medical populism. 

So far, both countries are among the top three nations with the highest Covid-19 cases in the world.
