President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Metro Manila Police Chief Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas as the new head of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
In a statement, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Sinas will be the new chief starting Tuesday, November 10.
Sinas will replace Gen. Camilo Cascolan, who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 for uniformed personnel.
The new PNP chief drew public ire over a mananita at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City that allegedly violated the 10-people limit on gatherings.
“Presidential appointments are really very executive in characters. It is a prerogative of the president. And he needs not to make any explanation for his explanation,” Roque said.
“Nonetheless, tiningnan siyempre ni President yung track record ng kanyang appointee. At matagal nang sinasabi ni Presidente na talagang si bagong PNP chief Sinas ay napakalaki ng naitulong ng kaniyang war on drugs,” he added.
