Due to the fast-spreading variant of the new coronavirus, the authorities in the UK have decided to impose a wholesale lockdown on London and most of England’s southeast.

They also ban the Christmas-season gatherings beyond individual households.

The decision was made after Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with the cabinet and confirmed the new Covid-19 variant in southeast England. He asserted that it is 70 percent more transmissible than previous versions.

The lockdown period will take effect on Sunday. It’s imposed to cut off the capital and its surrounding counties from the rest of England.

“When the virus changes its method of attack, we must change our method of defense. We have to act on information as we have it because this is now spreading very fast,” he said.

The embassy of the UAE in London issued an advisory to UAE citizens, calling on all Emiratis to follow precautionary measures set by the British government.
