Another strain of the novel coronavirus seemed to have emerged in Nigeria, the head of Africa’s disease control body said.
John c, director of the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), confirmed this, however, ‘more investigation is needed.’
The news came following the spread of a new variant of Covid-19 in the UK and South Africa that appears to be more contagious compared to the old version.
“It’s a separate lineage from the UK and the South African lineage,” he said in an online news conference from Addis Adaba.
Cases of Covid-19 in Nigeria and South Africa have already been increasing for the past weeks. As evidently seen last week, Nigeria saw a 52 percent increase in cases and South Africa a 40 percent.
Nkengasong did not confirm yet if the suspected new variant has something to do with the increased transmission.
“Give us some time, it’s still very early,” he said.
