Good news! Philippines to ban plastic soft drink straws and coffee stirrer ‘soon’

The Philippines will ban soft drink straws and coffee stirrers soon, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced.

This was announced yesterday during the celebration of International Straw Free Day. The DENR includes the plastic items in the list of non-environmentally acceptable products (NEAP) as deliberated by the National Solid Waste Management Commission.

“I am elated that after 20 years since the birth of RA 9003, the NEAP listing has now commenced,” DENR Undersecretary Benny Antipodra said in a statement.

“This is long overdue and we need to catch up with the demand of solid waste management in our country,” he added.
