For the last 19 years, Chris Malvar A. Calumberan, an entrepreneur and a husband, and a father of three, has been living and working in the UAE. He embarked on an overseas life in 2002 as a web page designer in Sharjah. After working in several production companies, he has been accustomed to home film and stills productions work in the region. Thirteen years after, he registered his company Chris Calumberan FZE and started working with global brands, including McDonald’s, Audi Magazine, Hermes, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton.
Before establishing a career in photography, he worked as the operations manager for Creative Management; location manager for Bareface Productions; and interior photographer for Better Homes.
Calumberan, who considers himself a general photographer, said that through his business venture, he enjoys the opportunity to deal with clients directly which gives me the freedom to choose his assignment and manage his time. “I guarded my reputation in the industry and was constantly double recommended by my loyal clients that added to my portfolio working with big brands and corporations,” he said.
The recent highlight of his career in the host country is the billboard that Enoc, the leading integrated global oil and gas player in the Middle East, erected along the Sheikh Zayed Road that features his photos that he had taken in 2017 and produced by Boomtown Productions.
When asked about what’s the best thing about Dubai, he said it’s the ‘tolerance’ for freelancers like him. “Dubai is considered one of the best and safest cities in the world. My family has grown accustomed to the environment and we considered Dubai as our home,” Calumberan, whose father has worked in the emirate in the early 90s and eventually took them here, added.
Every year, he and his team formulate initiatives that help the community. For the past couple of years, Calumberan conducted a photoshoot for household service workers on women’s month, raise awareness on World Alzheimers Day and Single Plastic Awareness Day through photographs.
Currently, the Filipino photographer plans to create content regarding what to observe during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
“Never be afraid to fail. Lower your expectations. Focus on yourself and try not to compare yourself to others. The better you focus the better your job will be. This will determine your output and will only result in a good outcome that will serve you best for your future,” he concluded.
