A top health official in the UAE confirmed that the recent spike in Covid-related deaths is attributed to the spread of viral mutations of Covid-19.
“The number of deaths in the country has increased recently, in comparison to previous week, due to the spread of viral mutations and lack of commitment to preventive measures,” official spokesperson of the UAE health sector, Dr. Farida Al Hosani, said during the weekly Covid-19 briefing.
Most fatalities are among unvaccinated UAE residents and visitors.
“According to recent statistics, a total of 94 percent of the Covid-19 deaths have been among unvaccinated people. Only six percent of Covid-19 deaths are among the vaccinated population,” Dr. Al Hosani added.
“These rates were also evident in the cases admitted to intensive care units in hospitals, where the highest percentage of non-vaccinated people admitted was at 92 percent,” she further added.
The number of unvaccinated patients among those infected individuals stands at 84 percent. Meanwhile, only 16 percent of those who contracted the virus are vaccinated.
Currently, 71 percent of the UAE population has been vaccinated.
