Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello said that he may impose a deployment ban to Saudi Arabia if the employers fail to pay some 10 000 overseas Filipino workers.
According to Bello during the virtual briefing, the unpaid salaries reached Php 4.5 billion, and that claims have been pending for more than four years despite the ruling of the Saudi court supporting the OFWs.
Bello will be attending a ministerial meeting in the United Arab Emirates from October 24 to 27, and he will bring the matter up. “I already informed the President that I will discuss it with my counterpart. I will make it clear to him that if it is not settled, I will consider recommending to the President another deployment ban to Saudi Arabia,” Bello said.
The Labor secretary added that he would not give them (Saudi Arabia) any grace period. The settlement must be immediate.
