The Abu Dhabi Police have issued a warning to drivers following the circulation of a shocking video on social media that shows reckless drivers running over pedestrians crossing the road from designated areas. The video was shared as part of a campaign aimed at protecting pedestrians and drivers from run-over accidents.
The Traffic and Patrols Directorate has urged drivers to give priority to pedestrians in areas designated for their crossing and to pay attention to pedestrian crossing traffic. Drivers have been warned not to be distracted while driving.
The video shows a man crossing the road from a designated pedestrian zone, but a pickup truck fails to slow down in time and runs over the pedestrian. In another incident, an SUV driver hits a cyclist, causing the rider to fly from his bike.
The authorities have stressed that drivers approaching pedestrian crossings must reduce speed and watch out for people trying to or waiting to cross the road. They have also highlighted that the safety of pedestrians is a joint responsibility between pedestrians themselves and drivers on the roads.
Under the Federal traffic law, drivers who violate the traffic law and fail to prioritize pedestrians in designated crossing zones will be fined Dh500 and awarded six black points.
