Spiro’s latest initiative has seen the deployment of an AquaTower, an AquaSan surface disinfection system, and Planet Water’s Hygiene Education Program in San Andres, Candelaria, Philippines.
San Andres is a community that has long struggled with contaminated water sources, particularly during the rainy season when the water is high in turbidity. The water supply is delivered through drilled borewells with an electric pump, and an alternative source from a spring directed to a tank, but both sources are positive with disease-causing organisms. This has led to a high incidence of waterborne diseases in the area, affecting the health of the community and the attendance of students in schools.
Spiro’s initiative to provide clean water to San Andres comes as part of this year’s World Water Day week of action, which highlights the importance of water conservation and sanitation. The AquaTower filtration system installed by Spiro is capable of removing viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and other contaminants, providing clean drinking water to up to 1,800 people daily.
A group of Spiro volunteers traveled all the way from Dubai, UAE to San Andres Elementary School to help deploy the project. The initiative also included Planet Water’s Hygiene Education Program, which provides education on hygiene practices to the community.
